FPGA's offer great flexibility and performance during the prototyping phase. Blue Melon used Xilinx FPGA's to decode a high speed DVI video signal. Furhtermore we applied soft core AVR processors with customized peripheral modules. The usage of standard soft core CPU's allows us to develop embedded software efficiently with existing (proven) tools. Implementing FPGA's in a design imposes new restrictions on PCB design and prototyping proces. Muli layer PCB's and BGA chip package are common in FPGA designs.
